Your Embarkation Day, Hour by Hour

A Honolulu embarkation day is gentler than most, because you are probably already in Hawaii. Sleep in, enjoy a late breakfast, check out of your hotel around midday and head to the pier for the boarding time you picked online. The ship sails in the evening, so there is time to settle in, explore and watch the city lights from the deck.

WhenWhat to do
The night beforePrint or download boarding documents, confirm your pier, and put documents, medicines and a swimsuit in your carry-on.
MorningBreakfast, a last beach walk, and check-out. Ask the hotel to call a taxi or book a rideshare for your boarding window.
Boarding windowHand checked bags to the porters, clear security and check-in, and walk aboard.
AfternoonLunch on board, the safety drill, and a look at your cabin once it is ready. Checked bags arrive over the next few hours.
EveningSail-away from Honolulu Harbor. Find a spot on an open deck.

Disembarkation Day

On the last morning the ship returns early and the process runs in reverse. Most guests put tagged bags outside the cabin the night before and collect them in the terminal; self-carry guests can walk off first if they manage their own luggage. The cruise line assigns times, and the terminal curb gets busy while the next week’s guests are not yet allowed in.

Because the morning is fixed but flights home usually leave in the afternoon or evening, Honolulu disembarkation days have a gap to fill. The best-known use of it is a visit to Pearl Harbor on the way to the airport, covered on our Pearl Harbor page. Beach lovers can instead store bags at a hotel and spend a last afternoon in Waikiki.

Embarkation-Day Mistakes to Avoid

  • Flying in on the morning of the cruise. A delayed or cancelled flight can mean missing the ship.
  • Packing documents, chargers or prescriptions in a checked bag that may not reach your cabin until evening.
  • Telling the driver only “cruise terminal.” Give the pier number.
  • Booking a morning flight home on disembarkation day. Leave a comfortable margin.
  • Skipping travel insurance on a fly-in cruise. Our sister site Cruise & Travel Insurance explains what a policy covers.

Embarkation and Disembarkation Questions

What time should I arrive at the pier?

Arrive at the boarding time you selected during online check-in. The line closes boarding a set time before departure, which is printed on your documents; do not cut it close.

What happens on the last morning?

You leave your packed bags outside the cabin the night before (unless you carry them off yourself), have breakfast, and leave the ship at an assigned time. Allow time for a busy baggage hall and curbside traffic.

Can I store luggage in Honolulu after I leave the ship?

Hotels usually hold bags for guests. The Pearl Harbor visitor area also has paid bag storage, which accepts luggage, for visitors heading there between ship and airport.
