From the Gangway to the Gate

The trip between the Honolulu cruise port and the airport is short. Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, known by its code HNL, lies west of downtown along the Nimitz Highway, so a ride from the airport to Pier 2 or Pier 11 is one of the easiest cruise transfers in the United States. What takes time is not the distance but the timing: flights, check-in windows and the morning rush of guests leaving the ship.

There are four practical ways to make the trip, and the right one depends on your group size, how much luggage you have and whether you want to stop somewhere on the way.

If you are arriving by air on embarkation day, the same choices work in reverse. Collect your bags at HNL, take a taxi or rideshare from the ground transportation area, and ask for your pier. For hotel nights near either end, see our where to stay page.

Building in a Stop

Pearl Harbor lies a little farther west of the airport, which makes it an easy detour on a disembarkation day. A private car or a tour that collects you at the pier and drops you at HNL is the simplest way to do it with luggage. Taxis and rideshares work too, using the paid bag storage near the memorial’s visitor center.

If you have a late flight but do not want history, spend the gap in Waikiki or Ala Moana instead; hotels and some shops will hold bags. Our local guide Best of Honolulu lists ideas for a last afternoon in the city.

Flight Timing Tips

  • For a Pride of America cruise, choose a flight home that leaves in the afternoon or later on disembarkation day.
  • On arrival day, land the day before the cruise whenever you can.
  • Interisland flights are short, but allow the same check-in time as a mainland flight.
  • Search fares on Airfares for Less, our network’s airfare site, or ask our advisors to price an air-and-cruise package.

Airport Transfer Questions

Does the cruise line offer airport transfers in Honolulu?

Cruise lines generally sell transfers between the airport and the pier, and include them in some air-and-cruise packages. Compare the cost for your group with a taxi or rideshare before buying.

Can I take the bus from the cruise port to the airport?

TheBus serves both downtown and the airport, but large suitcases are not practical on a city bus. It works for travelers with a carry-on only.
